Understanding the Cause of Scale and Odour
The cause of scale build-up in toilet systems is well understood. Compounds naturally present in urine are gradually broken down by environmental bacteria, eventually producing ammonia and the characteristic “urine” malodour. One of the key contributors is uric acid, which is soluble at body temperature but becomes insoluble in cold water. As temperatures drop, uric acid crystallises, forming hard deposits within pipework, on system components, and within the pores of porous surfaces.
Over time, this build-up can restrict flow, increase maintenance requirements, and lead to persistent odour problems—particularly in closed or small-bore toilet systems.

Effective Descaling and Odour Prevention at Source
Descale+ is designed to tackle these issues at their source. It breaks down problem compounds before ammonia can form, significantly reducing odours and limiting the build-up of uric acid-based scale. By dissolving mineral deposits and buffering acids with naturally occurring alkaline waste, Descale+ allows the system pH to rise slowly and safely towards neutral.
This controlled process helps protect system integrity while restoring efficient operation.
Note the scaling/calcium build up was extensive on this pipework. Scale removal was achieved by just adding Descale+ to the flush cycle of the toilet.

It forms part of a product range accredited by CEFAS with a ‘Gold Band’ classification, meaning there is no limit to the quantity that may be discharged into the sea. As a result, any residual Descale+ or treated waste can also be safely discharged to municipal sewer systems.
